Greetings and Goodbyes

1. Dreaming

maybe we will end up moving somewhere
maybe we will stay right here
maybe we will drift to places we don’t know
maybe we end up rich and famous
maybe we will change the world
maybe we will be the sound of rock and roll

I keep dreaming of tomorrow
I keep dreaming of tonight
I keep dreaming of the rest of our lives
I keep dreaming of the future, and I wonder what we’ll find
I keep dreaming of the rest of our lives
the rest of our lives

I can never tell what’s going to happen
I can never know what’s next
who will we become in just a few more years?
maybe we will learn some different hobbies
maybe we will make new friends
what will we be like in just a few more years?

I keep dreaming of tomorrow
I keep dreaming of tonight
I keep dreaming of the rest of our lives
I keep dreaming of the future, and I wonder what we’ll find
I keep dreaming of the rest of our lives
the rest of our lives

the future is open wide
let’s leave all the past behind
and go where our hearts so long to be, long to be
it seems there’s so little time
let’s leave all the past behind
and go where our hearts so long to be, long to be

2. When I'm Older

when I’m older I’ll have time
time to look back on my life
I can read those books that I never read
and write those letters that I never sent
oh, someday down the road
oh, sometime when I’m old

when I’m older I’ll become who I hoped when I was young
when I’m older I’ll become who I’m dreaming of
when I’m older I’ll become who it is I think I’ll love
when I’m older I’ll become who I’m dreaming of

when my youth begins to fade
then who I was will slip away
I can call those friends that I haven’t seen
and go some place that I always dreamed
oh, someday down the road
oh, sometime when I’m old

when I’m older I’ll become who I hoped when I was young
when I’m older I’ll become who I’m dreaming of
when I’m older I’ll become who it is I think I’ll love
when I’m older I’ll become who I’m dreaming of

time won’t wait for anyone, a few short breaths and then it’s gone
time won’t wait, time won’t wait for me
time won’t wait for anyone, we close our eyes and then it’s gone
no, time won’t wait, time won’t wait for me

when I’m older I’ll become who I hoped when I was young
when I’m older I’ll become who I’m dreaming of

when I’m older… when I’m older… when I’m older
when I’m older… when I’m older… when I’m older

3. Life Of Success

I’ve tried the advice, I’ve done all the steps
I followed the plan, for a life of success
you gotta make good grades at the grammar school
to go to a college where you’ll be approved
you get a new job making money fast
and then you’re on the perfect path

but I gave all my best for a life of success
and I traded in my soul, climbing the ladders chasing gold
but I’m still not impressed with a life of success
‘cuz the things that I really need, that life has never given to me
hey!

I watch what I eat, get eight hours of sleep
wake up and exercise, but I don’t feel satisfied
I should get a promotion with higher pay
buy a bigger house with designer taste
take a vacation if I’m feeling stressed,
the experts all suggest

but I gave all my best for a life of success
and I traded in my soul, climbing the ladders chasing gold
but I’m still not impressed with a life of success
‘cuz the things that I really need, that life has never given to me
hey!

the story I was sold, the tale that I was told
says all you really need is The American Dream
where bigger’s always best, don’t compromise for less
where wealth is how you win, and fortune is your friend
the story I was sold, the tale that I was told
says all you really need is The American Dream
yeah all you really need is The American Dream

but I gave all my best for a life of success
and I traded in my soul, climbing the ladders chasing gold
but I’m still not impressed with a life of success
‘cuz the things that I really need, that life has never given to me
hey!

4. The Great Beyond

we’ve talked for years of moving to the west,
to find some land and pay off all our debts
to build a place that we can make into our own
we formed a plan and counted down the days,
we figured out the journey we would take
we swear we won’t give up until we reach our goal

we’re gonna go out west with no regrets
gonna hold out hope for the golden coast
gonna ride that road until it’s gone
heading for the great, heading for the great beyond

we’ll pack our bags and set them by the door
we’ll grab the maps we’ve never used before
we’ll wave goodbye and set out for the great beyond
we’ll take the road that carries us away
for miles across the prairies and the plains
with mountains rising higher than we’ve ever known

we’re gonna go out west with no regrets
gonna hold out hope for the golden coast
gonna ride that road until it’s gone
heading for the great, heading for the great beyond

they say that the grass is greener I’ve heard
they say that the sky is clearer I’ve heard
they say that the sun is brighter I’ve heard
I know that the life is better I’m sure
they say that the grass is greener I’ve heard
they say that the air is sweeter I’ve heard
they say that the stars are brighter I’ve heard
I know that the life is better I’m sure

we’re gonna go out west with no regrets
gonna hold out hope for the golden coast
gonna ride that road until it’s gone
heading for the great, heading for the great beyond

5. Genius

I woke up with a new idea, I think it is my best one yet
I’m gonna make an epic invention, and sell it on the internet
first I need to find some partners, I’m looking for some business minds
we’re gonna take a little start-up and become a giant enterprise

so I call all of my family and friends and tell them all about my dream
but they say I should avoid the risk, they’re not as optimistic as me

nobody may ever believe us
but I swear this thing is genius
and we don’t need other opinions
‘cuz I know we’ll be making millions

I opened up a company office, a place for me to concentrate
but we haven’t made a single dollar, so the furniture will have to wait
now I need to find some money, to build a working prototype
I had to spend the cash in my savings, for a logo and a new website

so I call all of the bankers in town and tell them all about my plan
but they won’t give me a business loan, I doubt they even understand

nobody may ever believe us
but I swear this thing is genius
and we don’t need other opinions
‘cuz I know we’ll be making millions

oh I know for sure that I’m an entrepreneur
and an author of innovation
and I’ll place my bets on the things I invent
pretty soon they’ll be sweeping the nation
oh I know for sure that I’m an entrepreneur
I’m a jackpot waiting to happen
and I guarantee, that we’re gonna succeed
all we need is a trillion transactions

nobody may ever believe us
but I swear this thing is genius
and we don’t need other opinions
‘cuz I know we’ll be making millions

6. A Beautiful Life

we made some plans for the future, but they didn’t work out
we tried to live in the fast lane, but we had some doubt
oh would we just become so much like everyone? we didn’t want to know
we thought, “let’s create our own world, a place that we’ll make home”

so we’re building a beautiful life
we’re building a beautiful life
it’s clever and charming, lovely and darling
full of wonder and delight
what a life

we bought a house in the city, on a tree-lined street
we dreamed of how we would make it a whimsical retreat
we said, “let’s paint it white to make the rooms look bright, and sand the wooden floors”
we knew this house would be better than all the ones before

‘cuz we’re building a beautiful life
we’re building a beautiful life
it’s clever and charming, lovely and darling
full of wonder and delight
what a life

let’s raise up the curtains to a greater height
let’s put out the pillows with the purple stripes
let’s play all our records late into the night
let’s have a wonderful life
let’s dress up in style for the gathering
we’ll play the piano and the tambourine
we’ll tell all our stories late into the night
let’s have a wonderful life

we’re building a beautiful life
we’re building a beautiful life
it’s clever and charming, lovely and darling
full of wonder and delight
it’s sweetly orchestrated, something we created,
sculpted like a work of art
it’s finely decorated, carefully curated,
please don’t let it fall apart
what a life, what a life, what a life, oh-oh-oh-oh
what a life, what a life, what a life, oh-oh-oh-oh

7. Ambition

we never agreed from the very start,
there was a misunderstanding
I thought you were cool, and then you broke my heart
you’re just a bit too demanding

you only aim for the highest and ask for my best
take all my efforts, but won’t let me rest

so I want to come clean and tell you what I think
I’d like to make a suggestion
you need to slow down and learn to compromise
and take a minute to listen

oh ambition, you keep me wishing
for a life I may never find
you push me harder, you push me farther
up that ladder you make me climb
oh ambition, sometimes I wish that you weren’t mine

I guess I could say when I think of you
I have a sense of suspicion
‘cause I’m not really sure if you’re helping me
so tell me what’s your intention?

you want to make lots of money and buy fancy things
set higher standards and goals to achieve

so I think that it’s time we should have a talk
to try to end this confusion
can we call it a truce and go our separate ways?
a diplomatic solution?

oh ambition, you keep me wishing
for a life I may never find
you push me harder, you push me farther
up that ladder you make me climb
oh ambition, sometimes I wish that
oh ambition, sometimes I wish that
oh ambition, sometimes I wish that you weren’t mine

8. Kids At Heart

I can still remember it well
when we were just kids on the run
full of all the wonders of youth
our future had only begun

so how’d it go so fast?
how’d we come so far?
how did we end up where we are?
we were just those kids
wishing on the stars
and we’re still just those kids at heart

I can still remember it well
the summers of sweet innocence
weeks, they passed; the seasons, they changed,
and time somehow slipped through our hands

how’d it go so fast?
how’d we come so far?
how did we end up where we are?
we were just those kids
wishing on the stars
and we’re still just those kids at heart

when did the time leave us behind?
we weren’t ready to let it go
we weren’t ready at all
when did the time leave us behind?
we weren’t ready to let it go
we weren’t ready at all

how’d it go so fast?
how’d we come so far?
how did we end up where we are?
we were just those kids
wishing on the stars
and we’re still just those kids at heart
we’re still just those kids at heart
we’re still just those kids

9. Lottery

I played the numbers and won the lottery
I got more money than I could ever need
but it’s not the dream I thought that it would be
I bought a mansion with million dollar views
I bought a boat and a helicopter, too
but the stuff just sits there, it’s not fun for me
now all these people are waiting by my door
I don’t go out there or answer anymore
oh I miss my friends and miss my family

money comes, money goes, it’s very hard to hold
all the dollars I spent, I don’t know where they went
money lost, money made, I’m winning at the game
but it cost me everything, the day I won the lottery
the day I won the lottery

I quit my job and responsibilities
I have more free time than I could ever need
but my motivation just keeps falling flat
I took a cruise to a tropical resort
sat by the beach, but I kept on getting bored
oh I miss the simple pleasures from the past

money comes, money goes, it’s very hard to hold
all the dollars I spent, I don’t know where they went
money lost, money made, I’m winning at the game
but it cost me everything, the day I won the lottery
the day I won the lottery

I’m tired of the cameras, tired of the calls,
tired of the fear that I could lose it all
I wish those lucky numbers were never mine
I lost my inspiration, lost simplicity,
lost the innocence of who I used to be
I wish those lucky numbers were never mine

but money comes, money goes, it’s very hard to hold
all the dollars I spent, I don’t know where they went
money lost, money made, I’m winning at the game
but it cost me everything, the day I won…
la la la, la la la, la la la la la la…
la la la, la la la, la la la la la la…
la la la, la la la, la la la la la la…
but it cost me everything, the day I won the lottery
the day I won the lottery

10.Young Again

do you remember when we were so young?
songs in our souls and the life in our lungs
we were born to be shining bright

do you remember when we were so young?
no drop of fear could be found in our blood
we were made to go shine the light

baby we’ll never be this young again
can we live our lives like they never end?
baby we’ve gotta keep our love alive
can we hold it close and don’t let it die?
baby we’ll never be this young again
I know, I know

do you still think of the moments we made?
all of the memories we stored up and saved
we believed we would not forget

do you still think of the plans that we made?
all of the dreams that we hope for and prayed
we agreed we’d have no regrets

baby we’ll never be this young again
can we live our lives like they never end?
baby we’ve gotta keep our love alive
can we hold it close and don’t let it die?
baby we’ll never be this young again
baby we’ll never be this young again
baby we’ll never be this young again
I know, I know

11. Creature Of Habit

well I’ve figured out a lot of ways
how to make it through the day
and I have a lot of old routines
that I just can’t seem to shake
‘cause I don’t know how to change the thoughts
caught in my head, caught in my head
and I don’t know how to change myself
and who I have been, who I have been

I know it sounds melodramatic,
but I have been a creature of habit
so all I do is what I have always done, done, done

well I’ve tried a lot of different things,
but they don’t give me relief
and I’ve heard a lot of good advice,
but it brings no help to me
‘cause I don’t know how to stop the sounds
stuck in my head, stuck in my head
and I don’t know how to shut them down
from pulling me in, pulling me in

I know it sounds melodramatic,
but I have been a creature of habit
so all I do is what I have always done, done, done
I know it seems too problematic,
that I am just a creature of habit
so all I do is what I have always done, done, done

I cannot seem to shake it, I cannot seem to break it,
it comes so automatic, it’s a habit, habit, habit
I cannot seem to shake it, I cannot seem to break it,
it comes so automatic, it’s a habit, habit, habit

I know it sounds melodramatic,
but I have been a creature of habit
so all I do is what I have always done, done, done
I know it seems too problematic,
that I am just a creature of habit
so all I do is what I have always done, done, done
all I do is what I have always done, done, done
all I do is what I have always done, done, done

I cannot seem to shake it, I cannot seem to break it,
it comes so automatic, it’s a habit, habit, habit
I cannot seem to shake it, I cannot seem to break it,
it comes so automatic, it’s a habit, habit, habit
all I do is what I have always done, done, done
all I do is what I have always done, done, done

12. After I'm Gone

will you think of the last words that I spoke
will you think of the day that we first met
will the echo of my voice be ringing in your ears
will my touch be what you won’t forget?
will you still hear my whisper in the night
will you reach for my body in your sleep
will the echo of my steps be sneaking through the house
will I still be living in your dreams?

when the ending has come, and my story is done
what will you think of me, after I’m gone?
when I take my last breath, and I’m carried to rest
what will you think of me, after I’m gone?

will the letters I wrote still make you smile
will the photos we took still look the same
will the echo of my love be holding onto you
will you still see beauty in my face?
will the echo of my life keep living in your heart
will you still be calling out my name?

when the ending has come, and my story is done
what will you think of me, after I’m gone?
when I take my last breath, and I’m carried to rest
what will you think of me, after I’m gone?

when the ending has come, and my story is done
what will you think of me, after I’m gone?
when I take my last breath, and I’m carried to rest
what will you think of me, after I’m gone?
